The light, life and textures of the contemporary Mumbai working class are being explored and celebrated by the writer/director Paial Capadia, who won the Grand Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for his debut of revealing fiction. Centering on two roommates who also work together at the City Hospital-Medical Sister, Prabha (Kani Kusruti) and recently hiring Anu (Wild Prabha) -Plus, their colleague, Cook Parvati (Huya Kadam), Capadi’s movie is ignited at times of connection and heart pain. Prabha, her husband, from an agreed marriage, living in distant Germany, is courted by a doctor at his hospital; Anu wears a romance with a Muslim man who must keep a secret from her strict Hindu family; Parvati turns out to be engaged in a sudden expulsion from his apartment. Capadia captures the commotion of the metropolis and the serenity of the outdoor of a seaside village with the same glow, articulated by its superb actresses and the camera with lyrical naturalism, which occasionally focuses on the dream incident. All we imagine as light is a mental study of the transformative power of friendship and nursing, in all its complexities and wealth.
